Papa's Favorite Chocolate Cherry Trifle

My dad, Papa as we call him, will be celebrating his 62nd birthday tomorrow. The man loves these simple things: chocolate, cherries, and whipped cream. I always make this dessert on the eve of his birthday because the trifle needs to spend some time in the fridge... alone. All of the players have to 'get acquainted' with each other, ya know what I mean.

What you need:

• box chocolate cake mix
• 2 boxes of chocolate pudding
• can of cherry pie filling
• tub of cool whip

What you do:

1. Make the chocolate cake as directed on box. I split the batter between 2 pans. Easy!
2. While the cake is cooking and cooling make the puddings as directed on the box. Easy!
3. When the cake is cooled cut all the cake into 1-2 inch cubes. Put half of the cubes into your trifle bowl, squish the cubes down. Easy!
4. Put half of the can of cherry pie filling on top of the cake. Easy!
5. Put half of the pudding on top of the cherries. Easy!
6. Put half of the cool whip on the pudding. Easy!
7. Layer the rest of the ingredients in the same order ending with cool whip. Easy!
8. Now, if you want to get fancy you can put chocolate shavings, chocolate curls, or a cherry on top. 

True story: I thought that I could make this dessert perfect by making it with homemade from scratch cake, homemade from scratch pudding, and homemade from scratch whipped cream. Bad idea!! It was yuck!! Don't waist your time!!
