What you need:
- 1 cooked cabbage head (I just steam it till the leaves get soft)
- 1 pound ground beef (I used ground sirloin)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
- 1 cup cooked rice (I used brown rice)
- 1 can stewed tomatoes (14.5oz)
Cool cabbage and separate leaves, taking care not to break the leaves.
In a bowl mix ground beef, cooked rice, salt, paprika and pepper.
Form a small meatball and place it in the center of a cabbage leaf. Fold the leaf around the ball. (This is the way I do it. You can also fold the sides in first them wrap the leave around.)
Repeat, filling the cabbage leaves until all of the meat mixture is gone. Place the rolls (seam side down) in a crock-pot.
Stuff any extra cabbage leaves around the sides of the rolls.
Pour the can of tomatoes over the rolls.
Set crock-pot to low and cook rolls for about 6 hours.
This recipe is very flexible. Use any kind of tomatoes or tomato paste, use white rice, add your favorite spices (fresh dill is wonderful), use more or less rice, add onions... whatever floats your boat!

Those look just like my mom used to make them! YUMMY! I think we shall have some for dinner tonight. :)
ReplyDeleteBTW found you through WIAW at Peas & Crayons
Oh! My gran used to make these years ago, not sure if it's exactly the same ingredients, but i know it was cabbage leaves filled with something ground beefy. :) I LOVED it! I should have asked her to make it more recently, before i went vegetarian...*sigh*
